Whereas Canadians are already experiencing the effects of climate change; and

Whereas job creation has not kept up with labour force growth and Canada is losing significant energy sector and manufacturing jobs; and

Whereas Canada must invest in the development of sustainable energy technology and infrastructure; and

Whereas the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that the current pace of emissions is already consuming the entire global carbon budget, a clear indication that market forces on their own are not in a position to provide the kind of transition that will prevent catastrophic climate change; and

Whereas the Liberal government has committed to spending $125 billion on infrastructure over the next ten years, and to phase out fossil fuel subsidies; and

Whereas the Canadian Labour Congress and the Green Economy Network have put forward a proposal to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions by 35% over ten years; and create one million jobs by investing in clean renewable energy, retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency, expanding public transit services and building high speed rail links along major urban corridors; and

Whereas the One Million Climate Jobs plan creates jobs in communities across Canada,

We, the undersigned, urge Parliament to implement the One Million Climate Jobs proposal and commit federal infrastructure funding to supporting the transition to a green energy economy.
