Bill C-377 became law in June 2015, and reporting requirements would have applied to labour organizations beginning as early as December 31, 2015.

The Conservatives tried to spin Bill C-377 as being about union transparency, but constitutional, legal and privacy experts opposed the legislation. Opponents agreed that it was designed to single out, interfere with, and weaken unions by forcing redundant and unreasonably onerous financial reporting.

As a result, the Liberals promised during the election to repeal the bill. The Canadian Labour Congress said today that waiving the reporting requirements is an excellent first step and they are looking forward to total repeal of C-377 in the New Year.
