Closing tax loopholes, like the use of tax havens, would help reduce inequality and give governments the money they need to invest in people and public services. 

One important step toward a fairer tax system is public country-by-country reporting (PCBCR). This would require large companies to publicly share basic information, such as how much money they make, how much tax they pay, and how many people they employ in each country where they operate. That transparency helps ensure companies are paying taxes where they actually do business. 

Add your voice and tell the government that the ultra-wealthy must pay their fair share and be transparent about their finances.

By taking the pledge, you commit to advocating for our elected officials to:

• Value women’s work: Women, especially racialized and newcomer women, make up the vast majority of workers in the paid care sector. Yet many are forced to leave their jobs because of low pay, crushing workloads and poor working conditions. Canada needs a national care strategy to train, recruit and retain workers in care sectors and end wage discrimination.
• End Gender-based violence at work: Canada’s recent ratification of the ILO’s Convention 190 means we’re one step closer to a world of work free of harassment and violence. Now the government must work together with unions and employers to swiftly implement the agreement.
• Fix the child care crisis: Recently introduced federal legislation outline a national child care strategy including key principles long advocated for by labour and child care advocates. It’s time for the government to collaborate with sector workers to advance this strategy until it becomes enshrined in law.
• Make work fairer: The erosion of vital care services has created an over-reliance on unpaid care work, disproportionately provided by women. The federal government must invest in a Care Economy Commission to examine paid and unpaid care work and develop a roadmap to meet the increasing demands for care; reduce and redistribute women’s unpaid care work; and build a more inclusive labour market strategy to achieve high-quality, equitable care jobs.

It was one of the deadliest mining disasters in Canadian history. A public inquiry found it could have been avoided. After years of lobbying by Canada’s United Steelworkers, changes were made to the criminal code in the name of Westray. 

Now we need to make sure the law is enforced. 

When a worker is killed as a result of employer negligence, it’s a crime. Not an accident.

Send a letter to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada. Urge him to ensure that no other publicly funded institutions follow in the footsteps of Laurentian University. Tell him to amend the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) to exclude publicly funded institutions from seeking bankruptcy protection from creditors. The federal government must act now to ensure the CCAA is never again used to destroy another university or any other publicly funded institution.
