Congratulations to Alberta and its next Premier, Rachel Notley

May 6, 2015

Albertans voted overwhelmingly for fairness yesterday when they elected a new government to be led by Rachel Notley and the NDP.

“This is an historic, tremendous change in a direction that, I think, offers real hope to Canadians in other provinces looking for the same kind of change and the election of a progressive national government later this year,” said Hassan Yussuff, President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

“Rachel Notley and the NDP campaigned on creating good, family-supporting jobs, properly funding health care and education, and developing a national approach to a sustainable environmental future which will benefit all Albertans and Canada,” added Yussuff.

This fair approach to government, where everyone works together and does their part to build a better future, stood in stark contrast to the self-entitled, elite-driven government that went down to defeat yesterday. Instead of taking orders from business, Notley promised to work together with businesses as job creators and to work with all of the province’s skilled and professional public servants, such as teachers, nurses and health care professionals, to build a more diversified and resilient economy. And she promised to be better neighbours and partners with Alberta’s indigenous peoples.

“I’m excited by the change that Albertans made yesterday and I congratulate Rachel and her team and thank them for the inspiration they have given us,” said Yussuff.
