The CLC mourns lawyer and civil rights activist Alan Borovoy

May 13, 2015

The CLC is saddened by the death of Alan Borovoy. Alan was a Toronto lawyer and civil rights activist who passed away on May 11, 2015.

“The labour community and civil rights organizations have lost a champion,” said Hassan Yussuff, President of the CLC. “Alan was instrumental in the labour movement’s human rights work.”

In 1960, Borovoy started as Secretary of the Jewish Labour Committee in Toronto, fighting human rights cases for minority groups. He was very active in the National Committee for Human Rights of the CLC. In 1968, he became General Counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, a position he held until his retirement in 2009.

Alan Borovoy worked with a number of unions in Canada and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1982.
