It’s time to share the secret: The Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement

June 2, 2015

In partnership with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Canadian Labour Congress is calling on the Canadian government to publicly release documentation related to negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement (TPP).

We believe that all citizens of the 12 countries in negotiations should be able to review and contribute to the deal before it is finalized. So far, the negotiations have ignored input from parliaments, civil society, and the trade union movement.

To benefit workers and create shared prosperity, we need an open, democratic process, not secretive negotiations and extraordinary approval procedures.

A good agreement should put people first by:

  • Enforcing International Labour Organisation core labour rights;
  • Protecting the environment and public services;
  • Not allowing special rights to foreign investors to sue governments, thereby undermining local, state and national decisions and laws; and
  • Having affordable access to vital medicines with fair patent rules.
