Message of support and solidarity for Fort McMurray

May 5, 2016

The CLC is deeply concerned and saddened by the wildfires affecting Fort McMurray, Alberta, and surrounding areas. More than 80,000 people have already been evacuated from over a dozen communities in Northern Alberta. The fire is now 85,000 hectares in size and the provincial government has declared a state of emergency.

The CLC is donating $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal to assist in the relief efforts. Many Canadian unions have also generously contributed to the fund.

“Our hearts go out to the residents of Fort McMurray and all the affected communities in Northern Alberta. I especially want to thank more than 1,000 firefighters, the first responders and all the volunteers who are working tirelessly to help end the fires, and assisting those who have been forced from their homes,” said CLC President Hassan Yussuff.

The federal government has committed to matching all individual charitable donations made to the Canadian Red Cross in support of the ongoing relief efforts in Alberta. We encourage our affiliates and anyone who is able to donate to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal.
