Statement from the Canadian Labour Congress in Solidarity with Striking BC Nurses

July 10, 2026

Canada’s unions and the more than 3 million workers we represent stand shoulder to shoulder with BC’s nurses.

The breaking point has been reached. Like all workers in healthcare, nurses report chronic staffing shortages, unsafe working conditions, rising workplace violence, and wages that fail to keep pace with the realities of the job. They are now sending a clear message: the status quo is no longer acceptable.

This is about more than a better paycheque. It’s about respect, a safe work environment, and a healthcare system that gives nurses the support they need to provide the quality care every patient deserves. We urge Premier Eby’s government to address longstanding issues at the bargaining table.

Their fight is our fight. Every worker deserves the right to bargain a fair contract that reflects the value of their work, and protects their health and safety.

A strong public healthcare system depends on nurses who are respected, protected, and fairly compensated. That’s what BC nurses are fighting for, and it’s what healthcare workers across the country are calling for. It’s time for the federal government to ensure adequate funding for public universal healthcare for all Canadians.
